Ultrasound

What Is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a diagnostic tool that relies on sound waves and the echoes they create to visualize internal parts of our pets bodies. The most recognized use of ultrasonograpy is the sonograms that most mothers have during their pregnancies to make sure their unborn child is healthy.
What Do We Use Ultrasound For?
Ultrasound provides a non-invasive, accurate image of many structures not only within the thoracic (chest) and abdominal cavities but also within the surrounding soft tissues. It helps to identify a lesion and determine its boundaries, invasiveness, size and composition. This in turn allows identification of vital structures near the lesion. This can allow the safest approach for biopsy or aspiration, monitor for complications, assess changes in the lesion and monitor for long-term changes.
Is it safe?
Since nothing penetrates the body during a standard ultrasound except sound waves, it is extremely safe. Most ultrasound examinations don't even require anesthesia so the risk is even lower. We will probably have to shave the hair over the examined region so the study area will be obvious until the hair regrows.
Dogs have better hearing. Won't the sound hurt their ears?
As far as we know, animals cannot hear the sound waves produced by an ultrasound machine.
