Wildlife Rehabilitation
As part of its community service, Valley Animal Hospital participates in the triage, initial emergency treatment and placement with rehabilitators certain indigenous Virginia wildlife species that are ill or have been injured.
Currently, raptors (birds of prey) and turtles are our main thrust of treatment. Other species are referred to local private individuals.
While this is done by the hospital, we gladly accept donations to our Wildlife Fund to defray expenses.
Case 4
This is a common snapping turtle with a jaw fracture, head trauma and fishhook injury to the mouth. It has had an endotracheal tube placed in its windpipe to administer gas anesthesia and oxygen during the surgical procedure.
During the surgical repair a pulse oximeter (the white box in the background) is used to monitor oxygen content in its blood for anesthetic safety (just like we do with pet animals).
The mandible (lower jaw) has been wired to stabilize the jaw fracture.
An esophageal feeding tube has been inserted into its neck to provide nutrition while the jaw heals.
Case 3
Recovering from anesthesia, this young box turtle's shell fracture has been stabilized with orthopedic wire. The fracture was the result of an automobile injury, common in turtles.
Case 2
This is a red-faced screech owl that was hit by a car. It was stable on presentation but had a detached retina in the right eye which is being examined here by Dr. Stewart. After initial treatment and stabilization, it was transported to the Wildlife Center of Virginia for rehabilitation. Whether it will ever be releasable remains to be seen.
Case 1
Pinky Tuscadero has made it! She graduated today from Valley Animal Hospital, and will pursue a career in nutology at Forest University. Her mentor, Judy P., is very proud of Pinky's accomplishments, and wishes all the best for her in her new life. Live long and prosper, Pinky - we will all miss you!
